Holiday » Hinterland

In Romagna it is very simple to follow the traces of the time. To bring back the enchanting atmosphere and the ancient glory of the Middle Ages and the Italian Renaissance it takes only a short trip up to the hills of the Marecchia or Conca Valley. Here, Torriana, Montebello, Verucchio, Gradara, Mondaino, San Leo overlook from their peaks the Adriatic Sea and the mountainous landscape between Romagna and the Marches.

The Malatesta Family ruled Rimini from 1200 to 1500 and here built their strongholds, castles and fortresses, some of which still today luxuriously furnished, as defensive bulwark against the frequent invasions of their most fearful enemies, the Montefeltro Family, Dukes of Urbino. The most representative character of the Family, Sigismondo Pandolfo (1432-1468), is still famous because in Rimini he left different signs of great artistic value.: Tempio Malatestiano (Malatesta Temple) and Castel Sismondo (Sigismondo’s Castle). Giotto, Piero della Francesca, Leon Battista Alberti and many other important artists of the time that here felt at home and, still today, it is possible to admire their works of art.

A few kilometres far from Bellaria Igea Marina lies Santarcangelo di Romagna, a very special town considered the jewel of the Marecchia Valley thanks to its fortress, its well-known square and arch dedicated to Pope Garganelli, and furthermore it is also a town with a very special artistic talent and interest. Here a group of poets "Circal de giudeizi" meets together with his leader, Tonino Guerra, and here each year in July takes place Santarcangelo Festival del Teatro in Piazza (Theatre Festival on the road), one of the most important and special festival of the Italian and European theatrical panorama.

On the border between Romagna and the Marches, right in the heart of Malatesta country, the Republic of San Marino overlooks the territory by its three invincible and famous strongholds. Still today it is a sovereign independent state and one of the smallest states in the world. A trip to San Marino is always interesting and amazing for all the family thanks to its enchanting medieval atmosphere.

In these towns ancient traditions are celebrated with festival and fairs, and some of them are also the destination of night excursions aiming to discover the past.
